There are so many ways to serve within the Church but few require such an intimate connection with the lives of those you serve. As an interpreter, you are not just learning another language but also how to think and feel with the people you are signing for.
Participation in the sacred mysteries is achieved when the mind and heart are united with Christ who offers Himself to the Father during each Mass. But the participation of our voices and bodies in the responses and gestures of the Mass is also important. The latter form of participation can be challenging for the Deaf during a regular voiced Mass.
Like an Olympic torch passed from one interpreter to the next, the skills and the passion are passed on through sign language classes that help you enter into the mind of the Deaf so that signing becomes and action of understanding at a profound level and your service becomes service from the heart.
