Imagine being stuck on one side of a river, overlooking to the other side, which is filled with beautiful flowers and plants, but there is no means to get across to the other river bank. Standing afar longing to get over and enjoy the fragrance, hoping and thinking how good it would be if there were a bridge to take you over. This is exactly the feeling of the Deaf when they come to Mass.
The fragrance of the Eucharistic mystery on one side and the Deaf on the other, in need of a bridge to connect them: and that bridge is the interpreter at Mass, who brings Christ’s message of hope and love to the Deaf and walks with them in faith to meet Him.
Every Sunday, the 11:30 a.m. Mass at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Petaling Jaya is interpreted in its entirety using sign language to enable the Deaf to more fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist.
