DEAF MASS

The Miracle of the Mass

At every Mass we offer the only acceptable sacrifice of Christ’s Body and Blood to our Father in heaven for our salvation and are nourished by this miraculous food, the bread of heaven, to live lives of greater love for God. By the mystery of the Eucharist, Christ is made present, body, blood, soul, and divinity under the appearance of bread and wine. In the Eucharist, He feeds us with his total self so that our own body and soul are nourished while we journey through the desert of life's difficulties towards the salvation he gained for us by His death and resurrection.

Participation in the sacred mysteries is achieved when the mind and heart are united with Christ who offers Himself to the Father during each Mass. But the participation of our voices and bodies in the responses and gestures of the Mass is also important. The latter form of participation can be challenging for the Deaf during a regular voiced Mass.

It is for this reason that once a month a fully signed Deaf Mass is offered. Our hope is that by participating more fully in their natural environment where sign language gives voice to God’s message and our response, the Deaf will grow in their understanding and love of the Mass, and increase in fervour and the correct disposition to participate mind and heart in the Mass even when it is voiced.
